Respond to the following essay questions. Be succinct -- information is much more important than volume. This is due at the beginning of class on Monday, Mar. 8.

Contrast the portrait of Mary in the Toldot Yeshu with her portrait in the Protogospel of James. What theological problems do each attempt to solve, and how do they meet the needs of their respective communities?

Imagine that you have four copies of a story. Each has a slightly different version of a particular paragraph. The different versions appear below. Most of them mention a Rabbi Israel, whom you know to be the Baal Shem Tov, a frequent hero in Jewish lore. The other main character is unknown to you. What factors seem to have been at work creating these different text forms? How would you go about reconstructing the original?

[A] Reb Shmerl could see that he was getting old. His wife was old as well, and as yet they remained childless. He decided, "I will go Rabbi Israel, my cousin. I hear he performs miracles for everyone who comes to see him. Surely he will help me."

[B] Reb Shmerl knew that he was getting old. His wife was old as well, and they remained childless in spite of hours in prayer and fasting. He decided, "I will go to my cousin, Rabbi Israel. I hear that he performs miracles. In fact, I am told that he performs miracles for everyone who comes to see him. Surely he will help me, since I am a relative and a fellow rabbi. Also, his wife, Shirley, knows me and will convince him to help me."

[C] Reshmerl could see that his wife was old as a well, yet he remained. Childless, he decided, "I will go to my cousin. I hear that he performs and does miracles. Everyone comes to see him. Shirley will help me relate my problem to him."

[D] Reb Shmerl could see that his wife was unhappy. He knew that he was getting old, and his wife was old as well, and as yet they remained childless. He decided, "I will go to my cousin! I will go to my cousin, Rabbi Israel. I hear he performs miracles for everyone who comes to see him, and I am a relative!"
