The 1101 Spring 2004 Quiz #2 makeup 2/20/04Name:______________________

Respond to the following two essay questions. Be succinct -- information is much more important than volume. This is due at the beginning of class on Monday, March 1.

What is Paul's concept of 'righteousness', and how does it differ from that current in mainstream Judaism of his day (or today for that matter)? What does he mean by 'faith'? How does this differ from what other early Christians meant by that word? What is the role of 'good works' in Paul's understanding of the Christian's relationship with God?

What was Paul's view of the nature of sexual intimacy? How did that view impact his thoughts on intimacy within marriage and his views on divorce? How does his view impact his thoughts on intimacy outside of marriage (& why)? Was it in conflict with the libertine views? Antinomianism? In his own time, who would have disagreed with him, and why? How does it contrast with views current today in and outside of Christianity?

Other than sexuality, what were the primary issues that Paul addressed at Corinth? Can you identify a core underlying issue? What does he say about them? Some of them reappear in the letter to the Romans. How does he tone down or change his views in the later epistle?
